Snake venom creams contain a polypeptide know as SYN®-AKE, which is a synthesized version of Waglerin 1, which is found in the venom of the temple viper, a snake that can be found throughout South East Asia. It was developed by Pentapharm Ltd, a Swedish pharmaceutical, who have marketed SYN®-AKE as a safe, cheaper and less invasive alternative to botox injections.
Working like botox, SYN®-AKE temprarily paralysises the facial muscle, reduction contraction, and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles which leaves the skin looking more youthful.
Pentapharm carried out a study to measure the smoothing effect SYN®-AKE had on the skin. Their trial looked at two groups; one taking the snake venom cream, the other, a control group, taking a placebo. The trial lasted 28 days and found that 67% of those using the cream reported a decrease in facial muscle contraction and wrinkle size by 52%.
Borba, a skin care cosmetics manufacturer, carried out a blind consumer testing study that showed that 79% of those asked said they could feel that the product had worked, leaving their skin feeling firmer and tighter than before using their SYN®-AKE cream product.
